How do you schedule a year of training? Well, I think it’s a bit like the old saying that the journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step. I’d also suggest it’s about the theoretical task of eating an elephant – it needs to be done one bite at a time.
For 2016 I’ve set some goals
- Run a marathon
- Prepare for some short course triathlons
- Be a little more structured around my training
My plan for achieving those goals involves setting some medium and short term goals. So, my partner and I looked at all the potential races and running events on this year. We put all of them on a calendar and then chose the ones we decided we wanted to do.
Here’s the list
- Feb 27 – Roller Coaster
- Apr 16 – Run the Rock
- Jun 25 – Surf Coast Trail Marathon
- Aug 20 – Wonderland
- Nov 26 – Afterglow
That’s a race about every two months with half marathon distances or more the general rule although we do have a 16km race in there.
Those regular goals should keep us focused.
For the triathlon, I’m still in preparation. The main thing is to improve my swimming. In the water, I’m back at the level I was when I first started running. So, it’s going to take me a while to improve my fitness and technique in the water with a goal of entering my first tri late this year.
So, with regular runs, a commitment to improving my swimming and the addition of some strength training to my routine, I think I’ll achieve my goals for better structure.
